On those hot muggy days when there’s nary a cooling breeze in sight, you can have one (or several!) breezes on demand with a gazebo fan. Outdoor gazebo fans also have the added benefit of literally blowing away annoying flying insects with their breezes. gazebo fans with lighting can increase and extend into night your enjoyment of the gazebo. Outdoor ceiling fans for gazebos come in many shapes, styles and sizes to match your décor. There are hundreds of options. Let’s look at some important facts about quality gazebo ceiling fans to help you choose the right one for you.
First, make sure that your gazebo is properly wired, and has electrical service available. If there’s no power, there’s no way to operate a fan. Consult with your local electrician on wiring standards. Also ensure that your gazebo’s ceiling can support the fan you have in mind.
Choosing Outdoor Ceiling Fans for Gazebos
Look for gazebo fans that are UL rated for wet locations. The UL Mark stands for Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), a nonprofit private organization. UL scientifically investigates and tests thousands of products to evaluate electric, fire and casualty hazards. Even after the initial product evaluation, UL checks samples of the product again and again. A product must continue to meet safety requirements in order to bear the UL Mark. So it’s recognized as a mark of product safety. Wet location fans and lights are specifically tested for safe operation despite direct exposure to the elements.
Next, check the size of your outdoor space. A outdoor gazebo fan that’s too small won’t move the air. And one that’s too big won’t look good, and may overpower your space. gazebo fans range from 24 inches of blade span to 72 inches. You may want to take a cue from indoor fan recommendations for your outdoor room:
• For rooms up to 225 square feet (15′ x 15′) and larger, use a fan with a blade span of 50″, 52″, 54″, or 56″.
• In rooms up to 144 square feet (12′ x 12′) use fans with blade spans of 42″ or 44″.
• Smaller rooms up to 64 square feet (8′ x 8′) should use a fan with a 32″ blade span.
Ceiling height is important too. For maximum safety, gazebo fan blades must be a minimum of seven feet above the floor. A blade height of eight to nine feet above the floor will provide the most efficient cooling effect. You can buy extension downrods to allow gazebo fans to hang at the optimum level. There are also adapters for sloped ceilings. If you have a large rectangular outdoor gazebo, there’s nothing wrong with using two fans at each end for cooling. You may need an electrician to install a UL approved junction box and ensure that the fans are properly wired and mounted.

Styles of outdoor gazebo fans run the gamut. I myself am partial to the tropical look with fan blades that look like carved wooden palm leaves, or the wicker-look blades. Other popular finishes and colors include antique white, matte black, brushed steel, and brown. Matching your décor is, in fact, a breeze. Many outdoor ceiling fans for gazebos are available with lighting or add-on light kits. Look for lights that are insect resistant. You don’t want to draw insects to the light, or have to keep cleaning the fixture out. Some fans have optional remote controls – no switches or chain pulls needed. And gazebo ceiling fans are pretty affordable, with many styles under US$200, some basic styles under US$100. Why not treat yourself to a gazebo fan?
